Are you interested in working outdoors and leading both daytime and nigh time kayak tours? Then apply now to join our cadre of professional kayak guides. Keep in mind that guiding can be hard work and requires a great deal of training, preparation and responsibility over the safety of clients. Austin Sailboat Rentals, (ASR) guides need to excel at a wide array of skills, including leadership, kayaking safety and rescue, instructing outdoor skills, and teaching the local history of Ladybird Lake and Barton Springs.

Our kayak guides must participate in guide training and must demonstrate high proficiency and great Light_kayak_2communication skills. When completed, you will feel confident of your skills and prepared for whatever happens on the water, as you will have practiced it all in true conditions.

Our kayak tours will be conducted in glass bottomed kayaks. For night kayak tours, all glass bottomed kayaks will be equipped with 2000 lumen below water illumination kits for underwater viewing along with lighted kayak paddles for above water safety and high visibility to other boaters.

How to Apply for a Job

Applications are by resume only. A recent photo of yourself, especially in an outdoor situation, can be helpful. Send a standard resume augmented with details of kayaking and/or marine travel experiences, and marine natural history skills. We must have the specific information requested in order to properly evaluate applicants. Keep in mind that if you are in good physical condition, we can train you to be a safe and strong kayak guide very quickly.

Lead Kayak Guide (Part Time) Starting wage: $12.00 hourly plus tips

Qualifications: Strong leadership abilities in outdoor situations; able to lead discussions on the natural history of Ladybird Lake and Barton Springs and experience traveling on Texas waters canoeing and kayaking. Driver’s license and clean record with no moving violations in past 3 years. Current CPR and at least standard first aid required. If interested, please indicate this clearly in your cover letter. Be able to proficiently back up a 17 foot trailer into position with no assistance. Must have successfully complete the online Texas Boating Safety course. Highly proficient swimmer; lifeguard certified highly desired but not required.

Glass_Bottom_Kayak_2Duties: Assist in all phases of field operations, including leading kayak tours, conduct pre-tour safety briefing’s to clients and check for proper fit of PFD, for customers new to kayaking, provide basic paddling and kayaking instruction, transportation of gear, and routine maintenance, etc. Have a flexible work schedule spring thru fall as we will be conducing both day and night tours.

Work Location: Near Ladybird Lake in downtown Austin.

Assistant Kayak Guide (Part Time) Starting wage: $9.00 hourly plus tips

Qualifications: Leadership abilities in outdoor situations; able to participate in discussions on the natural history of Ladybird Lake and Barton Springs and experience traveling on Texas waters canoeing and kayaking desired. Driver’s license and clean record with no moving violations in past 3 years. Current CPR and at least standard first aid is desired. Internships are available for students and those with little experience. If interested, please indicate this clearly in your cover letter. Be able to proficiently back up a 17 foot trailer into position with no assistance. Successfully completed the online Texas Boating Safety course is desired. Highly proficient swimmer; lifeguard certified highly desired but not required.

Duties: Ability to immediately execute instructions from the Lead Kayak Guide. Assist in all phases of field operations, including assisting the Lead Guide in safely completing kayak tours, conduct pre-tour safety briefing’s to clients and check for proper fit of PFD, for customers new to kayaking, provide basic paddling and kayaking instruction, transportation of gear, cleaning equipment and properly stowing after the completion of each tour and assist in routine maintenance, etc. Have a flexible work schedule spring thru fall as we will be conducing both day and night tours.

Below is a list of skills we look for in candidates for Guide positions:


• The ability to perform self-rescue from wet exit to re-entry and/or rolling.
• The ability to stabilize a kayak and SUP in choppy conditions
• Working knowledge with tandem and solo kayak rescues.
• Purposeful movement of a kayak in all direction using paddle and edging, without the use of a rudder.
• Strong forward stroke to attain a pace proper for making way against currents.
